New York City has announced it is launching a pilot program for converting old pay phones into public wireless Internet hubs. Sounds neat, but what does it really mean for today’s new startups and entrepreneurs?
While this may make some feel great about finally doing away with the annoying pay phones, which haven’t worked in at least a decade, it may also be a slightly nostalgic moment for many others.
So if your city still has working pay phones this may be your last chance to go get your picture taken at one. In fact, why not make it your mission this week to find one and upload your photo to Custom Toll Free’s Facebook page.
So what does this change in technology mean for business owners?
It will mean:

Mobile marketing becoming more important

More Internet users

More spur of the moment shopping decisions

You need to be there or risk losing out on the business

More complimentary Wifi and unlimited data is certainly a great thing and perhaps a lesson learned by phone company giants increasing expenses and reducing the access to data.
However, increased access to the web also means more competition and more marketers piling onto the online and mobile marketing bandwagon. This is only going to make toll free vanity numbers backed by agile setups with advanced call forwarding and routing abilities more valuable and critical for standing out as a credible brand with a great reputation for customer experience.
