Recovering From Wildfires, 1-800 Hotlines Help Victims Handle the Heat through Legal and Mental Health Services. by: 00juno , June 26, 2012 Recently tragedy has broken out within the Midwestern United States. Wildfires have spread through the borders of New Mexico and Colorado causing displacement of homes and humanity. As a result, state governors declared a state of emergency within those areas. Ironically, the fires reached New Mexico near the Smokey the Bear Ranger District in Ruidoso, NM. The areas have been evacuated for eleven days and counting. Prior to the outbreak, the area suffered from a dangerous drought which only worsened the conditions of the fire. In addition, rumors have it that the fire began from an illegal campfire. It seems the old adage “Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires” has proven true once again. With the struggle to control the fire, journalists have found it difficult to release information which could prove pertinent to several families that were affected. In the wake of these issues, both local governments of Colorado and New Mexico have embarked upon an 800 toll free number service promising mental health support at 866-342-6892, and basic legal advice relating to lost property, damages, and lost pets. The mental health line provided by Optum through a $500,000 annual commitment, participates with the American Red Cross’s Annual Disaster Giving Program offering shelter, food and emotional support to all victims within the area. Another toll free service in Denver is providing free legal services relating to the fires at 800-332-6736. Both hotlines also serve to non-emergency related inquiries. These are just examples of how 800 toll free services serve as a great outreach method when natural disasters strike. In times of need and tragedy, 1-800 numbers have still managed to remain among the best and most effective means to send urgent messages.
