Could phones replace computers?

From large brick-shaped objects to tiny flip phones and finally the sleek, big-screened smart phones we’re familiar with today, the transformation of cellphone design and technology has been almost unbelievable. Each season brings a new wave of mobile devices, each more powerful and capable than ever before. Cellphones can now handle almost, if not all, of your at-home and at-work tasks without your needing any other device.

Increased battery life, more processing power, improved networking speeds and larger screen sizes are all making possible this shift away from the desktop. And soon, with future cellphone technology, you might be able to count on your mobile phone to do everything a PC can.

The PC has become a secondary compute device. In fact, 86 percent of adults under the age of 30 own a smart phone, compared to the 78 percent who have a laptop or desktop computer, according to a recent report by the Pew Research Center. This represents a dramatic shift from just two years ago, when less than two-thirds of young adults had smart phones and almost 90 percent had computers. In the next two years, we’ll be heading toward phone-only territory.

So what does the future of cellphones mean for your business?

When the most connected device is also a phone, it’s time to optimize your business for mobile. This includes:

Optimizing your website for mobile screens – If possible, make sure your website design provides a way to automatically adjust when it detects a mobile device. WordPress has a number of mobile-optimization tools that are easy to use.

Ensuring your business can be found on mobile search engines – Make sure your business’ contact information can be found quickly via mobile search. When your toll-free number shows up right away in search, all your potential customer has to do is tap on it to call.

Continuing to test and measure your mobile strategy – The only way to tell if your strategy is working is to test and evaluate. If a tactic doesn’t seem to be working, it’s a sign to switch it up.

Make your toll free number as visible as possible – Use a click-to-call feature to make sure your current and potential customers have an immediate connection to your business when they search on their mobile device.

It’s no secret that cellphones are becoming the dominant device. Win over more customers when you make mobile a priority.
