How to Pick the Best Internet Domain Name

The importance of an Internet domain name cannot be underestimated. The correct domain name can go a long way in helping your company establish brand awareness in the minds of your target market. Choosing the right Internet domain name is fairly simple, but several factors should be considered in making the choice. For example, established companies such as McDonald’s, Macy’s, and Ford primarily choose their primary brand, the name by which they are known to the public, as the domain name, for example www.mcdonalds.com (note that the apostrophe is not included). This strategy makes perfect sense because these companies already have a solid following.

Other major corporations choose short abbreviations because they are easier for the user to type and remember. For instance, American Airlines chose the domain www.aa.com while General Motors went for www.gm.com. However, due to the popularity of two or three-letter domain names, the majority have already been registered. If the one you’re interested in hasn’t yet been registered, it’s a good idea to take it now before your competition does.

Another consideration in choosing the best Internet domain name is its extension. Obviously, the most popular one is .com. In recent years, many individuals and organizations are also increasingly turning to domain extensions such as .net, .org, .biz, and .info. Certain suffixes are reserved for non-commercial organizations. Government agencies are entitled to use the .gov extension while educational institutions use the .edu extension. There are also country-based domain suffixes which are mostly used by business organizations operating inside that particular country.

Finding an obvious, easy to remember, and effective domain name will make your customers able to find you more easily, and ultimately, your Internet presence, branding awareness, and most importantly, your sales will grow.
