Marketing and #Technology: #Facebook on the Downfall as G+ Takes the Lead

Facebook stock took another huge dive yesterday but even if it doesn’t hit zero anytime soon, there may not be many advertisers or users left.
After a week of the blogosphere berating the social network and pointing out surveys showing few users ever pay attention to ads on the site, as well as a major decline in usage and logins, Facebook has more than a couple of black-eyes.
In addition, Yahoo News this week revealed that two of the top three reasons for ” de-friending” on the site were “Trying to sell me something” and “Don”t know well”, basically signaling a turn for the worse for advertising on Facebook, following and already dismal decline in revenues in the first quarter.
Forbes is already forecasting Facebook’s extinction by 2020, if not as early as 2017.
Can it be saved? The biggest move so far seems to be planning to roll out Facebook to kids. However, most kids are already on it (so no big jumps in usage), and while it could be profitable and keep some parents on it presents many dangers which could alienate it further.
A Reuters poll of Facebook users showed the 34% of those shunning the network rank their reasons as it has become “boring”, “irrelevant”, “not useful” and 4 “privacy”. That’s a major issue. On the flip side, G+ had those features a year ago!
If there is one thing that Facebook and all of us should have learnt in the last few years it is massive negative publicity like this eventually has a habit of becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just look at the stock market and housing crashes.
So give up on Internet marketing and social? No way!
G+ is causing quite a buzz and being called the best social network for doing business by geeks and Inc. Magazine. So go “hangouts” and consider taking some time off this summer to brainstorm an idea for an amazing mobile phone app to block out your competitors and get it funded on Kickstarter.
